scan|sion «SKAN shuhn», noun.
the marking off of lines of poetry into feet; scanning. The marks for scansion are – or ´ for a long or stressed syllable, ˘ for a short syllable, / for a foot division, and for a pause. Example: and firéd / th shót / heărd roúnd / th wórld /. In the oral scansion of poetry, a reader stresses the accented syllables heavily.
